I don't understand some masks. I thought they were used like a frame around an image but some are very odd! Why would someone use this one?..........

I've seen several where it blocks the image. What is the purpose behind those kinds?

Masks are best used as backgrounds not frames, although you can have masks as frames. That particular one you have is a background one and looks really quite effective.

You know you can use more than one mask too, which can be quite artisitc.

I quickly made this to show you what I mean

What I did: flood filled with the teal, then new layer, flood fill with a gradient, new mask layer from image (I had the mask minimised on my workspace) then merge group, I then added the tube and text, merge all flatten and I always export as jpg using the wizard. Here is the mask I used (I made this after a past challenge, if you want to use it just right click and save as to your computer)

my spelling )))

In general masks come from the use of friskets in silk screen and watercolour that are used to block areas of an image from being affected by colour or textures that are being applied.  In watercolour they were often used to proctect the areas of the painting where the paper was to remain white, the artist would paint the area with a frisket ( in many cases rubber cement was used) when the painting was completed the areas with the mask were rubbed and the mask removed.

Some digital masks work the same way, others help us make very detailed selections, by painting the areas we want to leave out with the ruby colour that the mask takes on in PSP when you paint with black, white removes the mask, it is rater easy to make very specific selections, this is the most common way I use masks.

I thought I had an old tutorial for PSP and mask but I don't the one I have was for Painter.

They can be very useful when making a college.

And many other effects.

Masks can be very confusing, but I love using them.

That first one is definitely a background type not a frame.  And I snagged the other one.

Thanks.

Just wanted to add this link for PSP8 users.
http://www.khiba.com/PSP/acompindex2.htm
The Masks 101 and Masks2 tutorials there are very easy to understand.

Once you get the hang of masks, they are a lot of fun to use.  I've been know to use 2 or 3 at a time.

This had a mask as a background, then I used a second one of top after I put the mermaids in.  Also used balls and bubbles on top of first mask.  Made it look kinda floaty.  I also animated it with the wave effect in Animation Shop.

Thanks.  The challenge that day was mermaids from the safetubes in that group.  Kinda fun.
