How do you get shadows like the one on these trees? The shadow starts at the bottom of the tree and 'leans out'. I've tried several ways in the Drop Shadow menu and can't achieve this look. Also, I've put the shadow on it's own layer but when I move that layer the image layer that I'm shadowing moves with it! I thought the shadow layer would be separate.--?? ![]()

That shadow effect is called a Perspective Shadow. The filter Eye Candy has a perspective shadow you can use. Also you can paint the shadow on a separate layer. I did a search on the net for Perspective Shadow and several links came up for Photoshop tuts. Here is one. They talk about using the Transform tool and skew the shadow. If this isn't helful, I will try to find more info for you. another one This one uses a technic I use alot: Basically dupicating the image, then using adjust brightness/contrast to darken the second image, then transform it into shape. Good luck.

They have a tutorial over at PSPUG using PSP for shadows http://www.pspug.org/tutorial/html/tutmini/pspug-deformshadow_v7.htm

If the reflection was on a flat surface, what I would do would be to duplicate the objects layer, set contrast all the way to 0 on the new layer so the object turns black, drag the new black object layer underneath the colored object layer, and then use the transform tools to stretch and skew it. Adjust the transparency of the layer, and sometimes I will change the layer to multiply or hard light but sometimes just normal works fine. (That first sentence is the longest run-on sentence in history. Sorry Mrs. Miller!) BUT these shadows are not on a flat surface and are, in fact, the only thing actually showing us that the snow isn't flat. Take away the shadows and it would look like a flat surface. For these, I'd just draw the shadows in a dark color on a layer above the surface (snow) and adjust the transparency and possibly try multiply, hard light, or one of the luminence options.

Tried some of the techniques. The first is with the Deformation tool (thanks Topsy!) and the second one is using Eye Candy (thanks Kjoyce!).......![]() ![]()

Well done Barbara. Perhaps the shadow in the second one could have been just a little lighter.

Those are great. I think the shadow would look better lighter too.
