In order for that to work on the side number keys, you have to have the NUM LOCK on.  :)

 For the benefit of those who, like me, use a laptop with no numerical keypad, you can still use the ALT extensions. Hit the Num lock key, then hold down Alt and type the required numbers on the designated keyboard number keys - my 'keypad' is, when Num Lock is on, M=0, JKL=123, UIO=456. 789=789. On my keyboard there are tiny figures on the front edges of the keys to show where the 'virtual keypad' is. My laptop is a Sony, but I imagine most laptops have a similar arrangement. There are also keys for the arithmetic functions / -  * + .  and Enter on keys 0 ; P / .  [  ( I find it a bit confusing that / is on 0 and + is on / but you get used to it).

 0169 on those keys, with num lock and alt engaged, is MJO9, which will then give you © which appears when you let go of Alt. Doing it again to prove it isn't a fluke. ©

And a few others  0189=½
                             0174=®
                             0147=“
                             0148=”
                             0167=§
                             0182=¶
                             0128=€

Thanks both for this information.

I'm starting to rely on keystrokes more and more as my hands tire of clicking the mouse.  Some days they are too sore to do any graphics, but I can at lease read and answer mail.  Thank you for sharing this info.
