We have been concerned for some time that the number of people voting in the monthly galleries is very low compared with the number entering images. Sometimes the number of non-voters is as high as 50% of the entrants. The Challenge voting is doing much better, but still isn't 100%.
Our worry is that this skews the voting and gives an unfair advantage to those who do not vote, because when you vote, you effectively vote against your own entry, given that no-one can vote for their own images. It is only really fair if everyone votes. We are not suggesting, of course, that anyone is deliberately trying to give their entries a better chance - in fact we are quite certain that nobody has even thought of it - but it is a consequence of large numbers of abstentions.
We have been urging people to vote for some weeks now, but not everyone has responded, and we feel we must do something to redress the balance in favour of those who do take part in the voting every week.
So from now on, the only images that will be eligible for the awards are those submitted by people who have voted in that challenge or gallery. You will, in effect, register your image/s in the contest by voting in it, and those who don't vote will be understood not to be interested in receiving an award. The award each time will go to the image, submitted by someone who voted, which gains the most votes. Ties will continue to be resolved by the Co-Ordinators.
