Most UK sheep are pregnant at this time of year, so farmers have to take them food and check that they do not get stuck in drifts. But in some ways they get on better than other farm animals because they can lick snow to get moisture, so they don't need a supply of water. Cattle, horses and pigs all have to drink, so the ice has to be broken out of their water troughs and outside taps have to be unfrozen to get water to them.  And the sheep don't feel the cold so much because of their woolly coats. The snow doesn't  melt on a sheep's back because their body heat doesn't escape the fleece. So although they may look a bit pathetic standing around with snow accumulating on their backs, they are usually more comfortable than the rest of the farm stock.

Beautiful scenery.  I'm curious as to how the sheep can keep all that snow on them and not be weighted down.  I assume they shake, but if the snow is "stuck" on their coat how do they keep from falling down?

They can shake it off, but it won't melt off sheep. If snow falls on a pig or a cow (other than Highland cattle) the warmth of their body will melt it. But a sheep's body heat will not penetrate the fleece to melt the snow so they have to shake it off if it gets burdensome. But just as their heat can't get out to melt the snow, the cold can't penetrate the fleece to make them feel chilly.

If they stumble and fall into a drift, the snow will build up on the fleece, and the farmer will need to rescue a fallen sheep, put it back on its feet and brush the snow off it. In winter the farmer has to inspect all the animals a couple of times a day, feeding them, checking that they are OK. When there is snow on the ground a livestock farmer has a very long day out in the cold looking after the animals.

Great Picture carol, I do like the snow and feel of the picture. The ice hanging from the trees looks good too. :-)

And yes... I do feel the cold just looking as it!
