If you get one goldfinch among your strawberries you will get dozens. When I was a child they used to steal our plums. The tree would be covered in birds and we would be lucky to find one plum with no holes pecked in it. They are pretty birds, but devastaing to fruit crops.

Vue 6 Pro Studio image, with Poser goldfinch imported as an object. The tricky bit was getting him poised by a fat strawberry. You can't see exactly where the strawberries are in the working screen, so you have to keep rendering, moving, rendering till you get it right. Once it was OK I applied differential focus, and ended up with an 8 hour render!

Oh my Carol, did that mean you couldn't use your computer during that time?

It is a great image though so worth the wait.

Very nice strawberries, nice and plump.  As for the bird; he's pretty to look at, but I'd get a broom to shoo him away.;)

That's a beautiful render.  Well worth the time it took to play and render.

You can do something else while it renders, though it slows the render even more to do that.  But I do that when I need to, and also leave it rendering overnight.  If I decide to put it in my next book of prints I shall need a copy 1800x1200, and that will take over 24 hours to render. I have done that with several of my pics. I have to choose a time when there is plenty to watch on TV and I am ready to take a lot of naps.:) The only hazard is if Rags decicides to blunder around and knock the overbed table my laptop is on, cos very occasionally she can make it crash.  But you can also stop the render, and save it so you can start it up again from where you left off. With a very long one I do that a couple of times - just in case .

That is a beautiful bird, Carol.  Our goldfinches over here in Ohio do not have red on their faces.

I've only done the short renders. What causes some of them to take so long? I think my longest was only about 15 minutes.

The atmosphere can make a difference - volumetric  and spectral models can take a very long time, and rays, called godrays in Vue, make it even longer.

And using depth of field makes for very long renders. There are several passes for each render. The first pass shows no depth of field at all, but every pass after the first adds more blurring to the out of focus areas, so if you have one small sharp area like this, adding all the blurring to the rest can be a long business.

And of course, the size of the render makes a difference. My basic renders are all at 800x600, but if I want to include one in my printed books, I do 1600x1200. Some of those can take a couple of days, but fortunately Vue will render in the backgroound while I do other things.

And finally, if you can increase your PC memory to the maximum and have a powerful processor that can help a lot to reduce render times. I have only 1GB memory so it would probably help me a lot to upgrade that.
