I have written up my carving method for PhotoImpact, and it is at

http://www.caroluk.co.uk/picarvetut/

I have several tuts on various ways of doing this in PI, but this is the simplest one.  This one can be done in any version of PI that supports split shadow - I think this is probably PI 10 onwards, but it may have been available in some earlier versions. If you want to look at any of the other ways for earlier versions, my tutorials index is at

http://www.caroluk.co.uk/tutindex/

where all my tuts for PI, PSP, Vue, Terragen and Javascript are listed.
